    From Booklist
Edited by two professors of management, this timely encyclopedia is aimed at students, academics, and career-development professionals. Its purpose is to examine a broad array of issues relevant to career development, including theoretical aspects; practices; and social, legal, and global influences affecting individuals' working lives.

Extensive in scope, the encyclopedia contains more than 400 alphabetically arranged entries that are signed and range in length from one to seven pages. A reader's guide classifies articles into 10 major themes, for example, "The Evolution and Development of Careers" and "Assessment Areas and Techniques." The work is written from the perspective of many disciplines, such as counseling, psychology, education, and human-resources management. Content is both theoretical (for example, how individuals select a particular occupation) and practical (for example, planning for an informational interview). A significant amount of the encyclopedia is dedicated to the social framework within which career development functions, with pertinent topics such as Diversity in organizations and Work-family conflict. Other areas receiving substantial treatment include assessment (Abilities, Strong Interest Inventory ); professional development (Mentoring, Sabbaticals); and career phases (Career change, Job loss ). Cross-references and a bibliography of monographs and scholarly journals are listed at the end of each article. Each volume contains the detailed index.

The Encyclopedia of Career Development is distinct from other resources, such as the Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance (2005), which primarily provides information on specific occupations and industries. It is particularly recommended for career-center libraries as well as special, academic, and large public libraries. Michelle Hendley

    Product Review
Lucy Heckman : "This encyclopedia fills a need in the literature and will be helpful to job hunters and those conducting research on topics related to careers and job hunting. It is an excellent starting point for research by university faculty and students, supplementing such sources as the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook, which looks at the future of the job market for various careers."

APADE : "With more than 400 articles in an A to Z format, this encyclopedia is the premier reference tool for research on career-related topics. Covering a broad range of themes, the contributions to these two volumes represent original writing by leading researchers, scholars, and practitioners in the field of career development. The multidisciplinary resource examines career related issues from psychological, sociological, ecucational, counseling, organizational behavior, and human resource management perspectives."

Michelle Hendley : "Edited by two professors of management, this timely encyclopedia is aimed at students, academics, and career-development professionals. The Encyclopedia of Career Development is distinct from other resources, such as the Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance, which primarily provides information on specific occupations and industries. It is particularly recommended for career-center libraries as well as special, academic, and large public libraries."

Rodney G. Loper Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books : "The entries are clear, jargon-free, and a good, quick read on any subject. It is a mark of quality editing to get such output from a variety of experts, many from academe. It deserves a place in every public and college library and should be close at hand in human resource and consultation offices. Any center that helps individuals choose or change careers should have a set as well. Having this available when I was training graduate students in a counseling training program would have made my job a whole lot easier."

    L. K. Miller : "This two-volume work offers a "Reader's Guide" to assist with finding specific entries under broader categories. The entries average 1-2 pages and offer just the depth one expects in a specialized encyclopedia- they are substantial enough to give readers a full definition of the term, along with examples. The index is quite comprehensive and extremely useful. Highly recommended."
