This reference gives price ranges (highs and lows) for 20,689 artists whose work sold for $175 or more at auction in America between 1980 and 1985, abstracted from Leonard's Price Index of Art Auctions. The 40-page opening section is a sensible, if simplistic, guide to buying art (here limited to paintings, drawings, and sculpture) and researching it. Artists included represent all periods and countries, but there is no information on individual works of art: Mondrian's painting prices ranged from $9350 to $2,328,480, but we don't know what the works were. For minor artists, the range is perhaps more useful. Leonard's Index itself is wonderful for the minor artists it includes. Suitable for general collections.
