While Kevik is learning, through trial and error, how to become a successful magic user, he too is growing in confidence and ability. All these new skills will be put to the test as Bart finds himself the focal point of the Hunter of the Horde, a ruthless villain who has ways to make men talk. Riyan and his friends must use every skill they've learned to rescue their friend from this deadly hunter. This second book in The Broken Key trilogy continues to weave a spellbinding story that carries our four fellow adventurers on their quest to find the final two segments of the Key that will unlock the fabled King's Horde. Riyan, Chad, and Bart continue their quest with the aid of their newfound companion, Kevik. The second installment of The Broken Key continues to follow the four friends in their search for the final two segments of the Key that will unlock the fabled King's Horde. Through the words of an aged tome hidden in a long forgotten room, and the recollections of a madman, they set out for where they believe another of the segments lies hidden.

There are many things about this series that I liked. Aside from the ease with which you can follow the characters and what's going on, I liked all the interesting aspects the author put into place. Such as the Well of Thought where Kevik is tested to move from Apprentice to Practitioner. And Riyan and Chad's time at the Warriors Guild. Their training and testing. When I first realized the author planned to go into detail about thier training, I groaned. But once I actually reached that part, found it not to be boring or dreadful. He kept it going by only giving the more exciting aspects of it. Another aspect I liked was Kevik's estate, the one he received when his master was killed in the first book. There are still a couple rooms with wards from his mater's time that he can't get through. Can't wait until he gets up in levels so we can see what's in there. Has to be something good!! There is action, more than in the previous book. Like when they flee into a forest to escape Durik. That sequence has some of Pratt's most ingenious stratagems to date. Especially the 'demon'. I'll not further into it than that. Creativity, action, and most of all, a good story. This is another enjoyable series by a good author. Read it!!
