Tom Wheeler, consulting editor, Guitar Player
"What tomorrows great guitarists should know today about doing their own setup and maintenance."
Product Description
From shopping for a first electric guitar to setting customized action, this do-it-yourself player's primer for owning and maintaining an electric guitar explains the ins and outs of: choosing the right guitar; cleaning, tools and basic maintenance; personalizing and improving on a "factory setup"; trouble-shooting; basic guitar electronics; setups of the pros; and much more. Written by Dan Erlewine, author of the bestselling Guitar Player Repair Guide and the popular "Repairs" column in Guitar Player magazine, this book also includes a plastic sheet with specialized guitar tools you can snap-out!
Reader Reviews
Dan Erlewine might well be the world's leading guitar repairer, but his expertise does not translate into a useful book for beginners such as me. On page two, he tells you "Rest the guitar body face up and on the bottom back edge of the lower bout." What is a guitar's "bout"? He never says. Is there an index or glossary? No there isn't? Is there a picture of a "Bout? Nope. That's the story of this book. Everything he tells you to do might be (and probably is) absolutely the right thing to do, but he fails to explain sufficiently *precisely* what to do for each procedue. The book is abundantly illustrated with photos of the author performing all the repairs described, but absolutely none of the pictures clarify the text. If you don't know what a bout is, or how to sight a fretboard, or how to read a gauge, then the pictures aren't going to help. Maybe this is a good book for people who already know the ins and outs of a guitar, but if you're a relatively new owner who wants his or her guitar to stop buzzing or stay in tune, then this isn't going to help. I wouldn't starting messing with my guitar with Erlewine as my guide, no matter how famous he is, because I think his book is more likely to help me damage my guitar than make it "play great" (I think he means "play well").
