From Library Journal
The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY, houses a premier glass collection. Whitehouse, the museum's executive director, documents the most significant acquisitions made by the museum in 1990s, featuring a variety of international glasswork. Etched glass, beadwork, glass furniture, windows, jewelry, and molded glass are some of the featured forms. While most of the examples are from the Art Nouveau time period and later, examples from the Victorian era and earlier are also provided. This visually appealing book provides a varied, chronological overview for scholars, dealers, and general admirers of glasswork. Glass Art from UrbanGlass is another showcase of a vast array of glasswork with a more contemporary bent. The focus of this book is the work of 175 artists and designers associated with UrbanGlass: New York Center for Contemporary Glass. Yelle, the founder of UrbanGlass, presents more than 500 color images, providing an ample view of the contemporary glass art scene. Each page features photos of an artwork and the artist who created it as well as the artist's name, year of birth, and place of residence. Minimal commentary is provided, and the lack of an index is unfortunate. The Corning book provides more of an international overview of glasswork, while Glass Art gives a useful commentary on recent works. Both books are recommended for libraries collecting this subject area.DJennifer Mayer, Univ. of Wyoming Libs., Laramie Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.
