19th Century Lustreware by Michael Gibson
19th Century Lustreware

Product Description
Lustre is a form of decoration which can be applied to any form of ceramic body, be it earthenware or porcelain. Its popularity in the nineteenth century was immense and there was a huge export market from Britain to Europe and America. Practically every pottery in the north of England had a go at this new and exciting form of decoration. There have been surprisingly few books on lustreware and most of those that have appeared have suffered from a lack of coloured illustrations, almost an essential for a proper coverage of and understanding of the subject. With this new book the situation is redressed. Of the 300 illustrations some 150 are in colour and large numbers in both categories are of pieces, some extremely rare, that have never been seen in print before. Among these are examples from the vast but little-known Gutman collection in the United States, to which country large quantities of lustreware were exported in the nineteenth century. The author is one of the foremost authorities on lus

Alabama Folk Pottery by Joey Brackner
Alabama Folk Pottery

Product Review
“A major addition to the study of southern pottery as well as Alabama history and art. I’m truly impressed with the extraordinary number of potters Brackner has uncovered and the wide range of evidence he uses to shed light on their achievements.” —Charles (Terry) Zug, author of Turners and Burners: The Folk Potters of North Carolina

Alabama Folk Pottery should quickly become a classic. What especially excites me is that it fills a void in the bigger picture, allowing us to follow the migration of potters and, with them, the evolution of a regional ceramic tradition. At the same time, Brackner demonstrates how these migrations led to an identifiable Alabama pottery tradition.” —John Burrison, author of Brothers in Clay: The Story of Georgia Folk Pottery

Product Description
Celebrating the people, techniques, and artistry of a traditional craft.   Based on 20 years’ research and experience with potters and their wares, folklorist Joey Brackner presents a definitive, comprehensive survey of folk potters and the folk pottery tradition in Alabama from the early historic period to the present. Illustrated with hundreds of color and black-and-white photographs, the book examines much admired and sought-after ceramics (such as crocks, face jugs, bowls, churns, and garden pottery) appreciated the world over for their originality, beauty, and utility. The book’s publication coincides with a major exhibition of Alabama folk pottery curated by Brackner and set to open at the Birmingham Museum of Art September 30, 2006.            This volume places historic Alabama pottery making into a national and international context and describes the technologies that distinguish Alabama potters from the rest of the southeast. It explains how a blending and borrowing among cultural groups that settled the state nurtured its rich regional traditions. In addition to providing a detailed discussion of pottery types, clays, glazes, slips, and firing methods, Alabama Folk Pottery presents a geographic survey of the state’s pottery regions with a comprehensive list of Alabama folk potters, historic and contemporary—a valuable resource for collectors, scholars, and curators.           Most important, in the pages and photographs of Alabama Folk Pottery, Brackner introduces—largely through their own words—the dynamic communities and families of Alabama potters who have carefully and proudly passed on their methods and styles from generation to generation. As Mobile archaeologist Greg Waselkov declares, “Alabama Folk Pottery reveals the humanity behind the artistry and the technical sophistication of this historic craft. Starting with magnificent ceramic churns, jugs, braziers, and grave markers found today largely in museums and private collections, this book pieces together the story of the talented men and women who have transformed Alabama clay into objects of great functionality, beauty, and personal expression.”            * Recipient of the Anne B. and James B. McMillan Manuscript Prize   Joey Brackner is Director of the Alabama Center for Traditional Culture, a division of the Alabama State Council on the Arts in Montgomery.

Amber by David A. Grimaldi
Amber

From Library Journal
This beautifully illustrated book will be popular among naturalists and artists alike. Grimaldi, chair of the American Museum of Natural History's Department of Entomology, has skillfully combined the natural history of amber with coverage of its uses throughout history in art and sculpture. He discusses the properties of various types of amber, its most common localities, the types of life it typically preserves, and examples of past forgeries. Grimaldi's discussion of objects made of amber, from pipe stems to wall murals, range from the Mesolithic era to the 19th century and include all parts of the world. Among the book's greatest strengths are the copious and outstanding photographs and illustrations of specimens and objets d'art with accompanying descriptive notes. A wide-ranging treatise that will appeal to everyone from lay readers to specialists; highly recommended.?Jeanne Davidson, Oregon State Univ. Lib., Corvallis

From Booklist
Every semiprecious jewel needs a major motion picture to increase its audience appeal. Five years ago, a book on amber could guarantee an audience--perhaps--only of Lithuanian ladies of a certain age. But after Jurassic Park, is there an American who doesn't know about the miracles of long ago that are encapsulated in petrified resin? This lavish book captures both the beauty and the strangeness of amber: the beauty, in glorious, honey-toned color images of some of the world's most exquisite amber artifacts; the strangeness, in close-ups of leaf fragments, tiny feathers, or whole bees buried among bubbles of ancient air. The text, meanwhile, is solid and comprehensive; the rest of the illustrations, including at least as many black-and-white historical and documentary plates as there are colorplates, excellent.
