Devoted to Antiques Roadshow? Wondering if Great-Granddad's cane is worth anything? If it's a carved Narwhal whalebone presentation cane, it's worth $2,530. And that delicate 14-inch platter you picked up at an estate sale just might be Mulberry Ware and worth $250.
The Country Americana Price Guide is devoted to early American antiques and their modern-day collectibility. Though "Country Americana" is often thought of as products produced and used in rural areas, editor Kyle Husfloen points out that many items we consider "country" were actually mass-produced in cities. For the guide's purposes, he says "country" refers to "items [which] reflect our yearning for the charm and nostalgia of the 'good old days.'"
With 43 categories, the book covers a vast amount of collectibles from baskets and bootjacks to cash registers to fruit jars to woodenwares and writing accessories. Each section is prefaced by an explanation of what the items were used for, where and when they were produced, and a comment on the current prices. Descriptions are short and clear. For example, "Pitcher, 10" h. brushed cobalt blue tulip decoration, 'Burger & Lang, Rochester, NY,' 1 gal., ca. 1870 (some surface wear & chips along the rim from use) $605." Each page features four or five black-and-white photos of the items, plus there is a 16-page section of color examples.
For beginning collectors, auctioneer Tom Porter provides a set of rules to shop by. Rule number one, he says, is "buy what you like" because "who can put an monetary value on enjoyment?" While the Country Americana Price Guide is interesting to leaf through, it's primarily meant for serious collectors. --Dana Van Nest

This 432 page, softbound, 6 x 9" year 2000 book is really handy to keep with you as a reference guide when you antique. There are about 50 full color and 1000 black and white photos. Year 2000 values are provided. In addition to articles on investing in antiques, major topics range from baskets, butter molds and stamps, cash registers, chalkware and decoys to kitchenwares, laundry room, lightning rod balls, shaker items, tobacciana and writing accessories. Each topic is comprehensively covered, and individual items contain enough detail for easy item identification. It is truly one of the most comprehensive and in-depth price guides ever published on these important cultural artifacts. You'll refer to it often.
