Reader Reviews
This book is in many ways Extraordinary. It is a gift, offered most generously, to anyone who has ever plowed through the fields of Brimfield, hunted in the Shupp's Grove forest or walked the aisles of Atlantic City, seeking treasures in the Golden Age of Toy Collecting. Paul and Stephanie Sadagursky entered the world of dealing and collecting toys, naive, innocent, and eager to learn. Thirty-five years later they had learned a lot, sometimes the hard way, and traveled far, but never lost that child-like quality. From modest beginnings they elevated themselves to All-Star status among the world of Antique Toy Dealers. Nevertheless, contrary to the opinion of the first reviewer, who so graphically reveals his own pomposity, the Sadagurskys were never "self-aggrandizing". Nor did they profess themselves to be "Experts". While others acquired the toys they sold, Paul and Stephie acquired knowledge, and remained ever eager to learn more each day. The book itself reflects this quality. It chronicles the story of how the threads of their lives, strand by strand, became intertwined in the Tapestry of Toy Collecting. And the author weaves her story with an honesty that is both charming and disarming. Although, I might add, the reader soon detects, and forgives her for, a thin veneer of tactful understatement and the leaving of some names unmentioned to protect the feelings of both the innocent and guilty. The world of toy collecting is indeed a minefield of delicate sensibilities and bloated egos, as evidenced by the aforementioned review. And the book tiptoes through some perilous situations without causing any detonations, much as in real life the author, herself, managed to do. Between the covers one can view the ever-changing Panorama of the Golden Age of Toy Collecting. The Great Shows, here and abroad, from their birth through their demise; all spring to Life again. The Great People are here too, dealers, pickers, collectors; familiar names to some readers will be new acquaintances to others, but each is colorfully characterized with an economy of words, not one of which rings untrue. This book is about a way of life that few can imagine. And on the surface it might not be everybody's cup of tea. But for anyone, who knew the joys of collecting toys in the last half century, it is a perfect brew, easy to savor, hard to set down, and served with just the right amount of sugar. Although, good to the last drop, Beware! It might keep you awake at night, as it did me, well into the wee hours of the morning. For others, not seeped in toy collecting, and antique shows are not your bag, don't shy away. "The Road to Happy Days" offers a delicious glimpse into a World of Wonder, in which the hunt for toys goes on each day, and Christmas is forever just around the corner.
