The Keir Collection is probably one of the most remarkable and wide-ranging collections of works of art gathered together in any country since World War II. It is famous for its Islamic art. With the publication of this sixth volume on the collection, its European textiles could well gain equal renown. There are few museums that can rival it in this field for its scope, quality, variety. It is particularly strong on Italian and French textiles of the 15th to the 18th centuries. But it has also many notable works from late antiquity, the medieval period and the Renaissance, produced in Egypt, Spain, England and Germany. Its coverage is so extensive that the book is in effect a general history of the subject illustrating the evolution of design and technique from Roman times to 1800.

This volume highlights 250 of the 2500 works of art collected by Lloyd Cotsen, former chair of the Neutrogena Corporation, which are currently on view in the new Neutrogena Wing of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, NM. Kahlenberg, former curator of the Textile and Costume Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, worked with Cotsen to build the collection over a period of 35 years. Fascinated by artistic expression, Cotsen selected objects created throughout the world by both skilled and unskilled artisans and crafters working in different media, including textiles, ceramics, wood, straw, and paper. Either ceremonial or functional in nature, these pieces are organized geographically and discussed by various scholars, who detail their history as well as their aesthetics. Revised and expanded from the original 1976 exhibition catalog by the same author, this excellent work shows the growth of the tapestry collection at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the advances made in scholarship during the past 15 years. The product of both planned purchases and individual donations, the San Francisco collection provides a good cross section of the history of this art. Chronologically arranged, each of the 100 pieces cataloged (compared with 74 in the original edition) gets a full technical and historical entry; most appear in color and with comparative or supportive detail.
