This richly illustrated book is not only a history of English interiors from the 17th through the 19th centuries, but also a partial inventory of the holdings--over the past 50 years--of an important London antiques firm, Mallett & Son. The author is one of the firm's curators. Although his primary emphasis is on English furniture, he includes examples from Holland, France, Germany, Sweden, and India to illustrate cultural influences as well as to show the firm's scope. Many of the items illustrated here are now in museums or in private collections and thus inaccessible to the public. Anyone seeking information on furniture history or on the vagaries of the antiques and auction market will find this book rewarding.
