Reader Reviews
I've been frequenting antique auctions for many years, yet there are still instances when I am caught off guard. Take, for example, my most recent auction experience. I'd been drooling over a tilt-top regency table at a preview when I noticed a fellow to my right closely examining a lamp. A celadon vase that had been fashioned into a lamp. The lamp looked perfectly innocuous, and I thought the fellow a perfect fool to be so easily swayed by, what was to my eyes, something normally seen only at a Salvation Army thrift store, or a garage sale in a trailer park. Furthermore, I noted that the auction estimate on the lamp was $40. I felt like a god of antiques at that moment, high upon my lofty perch in the heavens, far above this inferior person and his interest in third-rate lamps. After all, I was vying for the gorgeous regency table, so that meant I was a man of discriminating tastes. On the night of the auction, there was a flurry of bids on the lamp, and the hammer only fell when the bid reached the early thousands. The gods decided to teach me a lesson in humility twice that night, as the bids on the regency table quickly outpaced my limited means. Running home that night from the auction, the first book I reached for was one of my Miller's Price Guides. After some furious page turning, there, for all the world to see, was the harmless little lamp with a string of zeros following its leading digit. In short, the best way to stay ahead of the game is a sound grounding in the discipline. A perusal of a Miller's Price Guide prior to auction night will ensure that nothing of any note will fall under your antique's radar.
