Grand Rapids Furniture: The Story of America's Furniture City (Shopping and Antiques) by Christian G. Carron
Grand Rapids Furniture: The Story of America's Furniture City (Shopping and Antiques)

Book Description
Grand Rapids Furniture: The Story of America's Furniture City is the first major history to be published about the place that once crowned itself "The Paris of Furniture Design." Over 200 photos illustrate the lively text by Christian G. Carron, curator of one of the nation's largest furniture collections. The story begins in the 1830's with the region's first cabinetmakers, and covers designs from Victorian and Modern through Reform and Revival to the high-tech office furniture of the late twentieth century.

Delving deeper than forms and ornamentation, this volume includes anecdotes and insights from four of the most knowledgeable experts on the Grand Rapids furniture industry.

The detailed manufactures directory lists more than 800 West Michigan furniture makers past and present, including company names, locations, designers, and product descriptions. Never-before-published hints for identifying Grand Rapids furniture complement more than 400 maker's marks and labels, to make this an important resource for every reference shelf.

About The Author
Christian G. Carron is head of the curatorial department of the Public Museum of Grand Rapids, and has cultivated the furniture collections there for over ten years. Each year he answers hundreds of requests from around the world for information on Grand Rapids furniture. After studying in the Historical Administration Program at Eastern Illinois University, Carron curated similar collections in Louisiana and Kentucky. An active lecturer and author, Carron conducted much of the research for this publication during the development of The Furniture City, a permanent exhibition that opened in 1994.

Hollywood Stuff (Jane Wheel Mysteries, No. 5) by Sharon Fiffer
Hollywood Stuff (Jane Wheel Mysteries, No. 5)

From Publishers Weekly
In Fiffer's disappointing fifth Jane Wheel mystery (after 2004's Buried Stuff), collectibles maven Jane is thrilled when Wren "Bix" Bixby, an L.A. movie producer, calls to say she wants to make a movie about Jane's adventures as a part-time PI. Jane and Tim Lowry, her best friend and business partner, head to California on the next plane. She's not there long before she runs into her college beau, Jeb Gleason, who, it turns out, is buddy-buddy with Bix. Then an explosion in a prop room lands Bix in the hospital. To make matters worse, Bix's business partner—or, rather, someone whom Jane thinks is Bix's business partner—is stabbed at a large flea market with a potentially valuable letter opener. While investigating this crime spree, Jane realizes that her old flame's writing career isn't as golden as it seems. Unfortunately, two-dimensional characters and the killer's obvious identity will limit readership to less demanding cozy fans. (June)

From Booklist
Leaving suburban Chicago behind for this fifth in the series, antiques picker and new PI Jane Wheel travels with her longtime pal Tim Lowry to Hollywood, where a movie producer is interested in buying the rights to the pair's past sleuthing adventures. But new adventures await. Details about the antique and flea-market businesses--a staple of the series--are abundant again, but this time there is also plenty of background on moviemaking. Jane and Tim's comfortable friendship continues, but Jane also works closely with partner Bruce Oh, whose measured investigative techniques mix effectively with her own impetuous style. Sue O'Brien

Light Fell by Evan Fallenberg
Light Fell

From Publishers Weekly
When literature professor Joseph Licht invites his five adult sons to celebrate his 50th birthday in 1996 Tel Aviv, he hopes to win his boys' love and forgiveness by plying them with their favorite foods. From that opening in Fallenberg's ambitious debut, Joseph's life unfolds in retrospect: 20 years earlier, as a married father of five, Joseph discovers he is gay as he falls in love with a charismatic, and married, rabbi. The rabbi kills himself not long after he and Joseph start their affair, and a crushed Joseph, in one fell swoop, jettisons his marriage and adherence to Modern Orthodox Judaism. The familial repercussions are myriad and extreme, leaving Joseph's wife bereft and his sons with issues that range from low self-esteem and lack of trust to fanatical nationalism and religiosity. While Joseph and the rabbi's lovemaking is sentimentalized, and Joseph's and one son's homosexual awakenings seem abrupt, Fallenberg's descriptions of Israeli life, from the rural and academic arenas to the gay milieu, are credible and absorbing. The book adroitly sketches the heartfelt struggles of a sympathetic cast. (Jan.)

Product Description

Twenty years have passed since Joseph left behind his entire life-his wife Rebecca, his five sons, his father, and the religious Israeli farming community where he grew up-when he fell in love with a man, the genius rabbi Yoel Rosenzweig. Their affair is long over, but its echoes continue to reverberate through the lives of Joseph, Rebecca, and their sons in ways that none of them could have predicted.

Now, for his fiftieth birthday, Joseph is preparing to have his five sons and the daughter-in-law he has never met spend the Sabbath with him in the Tel Aviv penthouse that he shares with a man-who is conveniently out of town that weekend. This will be the first time Joseph and all his sons will be together in nearly two decades.

The boys' lives have taken widely varying paths. While some have become extremely religious, another is completely cosmopolitan and secular, and their feelings toward their father range from acceptance to bitter resentment. As they prepare for this reunion, Joseph, his sons, and even Rebecca, must confront what was, what is, and what could have been.

Evan Fallenberg is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and has since 1985 lived in Israel, where he is a writer, teacher, and translator. His recent translations include novels by Batya Gur and Meir Shalev. He is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and the Vermont College MFA program. He is the father of two sons.
