Caring for Your Cherished Possessions: The Experts' Guide to Cleaning, Preserving, and... by Mary K. Levenstein
Caring for Your Cherished Possessions: The Experts' Guide to Cleaning, Preserving, and...

From Library Journal
Levenstein and Biddle have gone through the whole house and give detailed instructions on how to care for virtually every possession in it--metals, photographs, ceramics, glass, rugs, clothing, textiles, quilts, furniture, and artwork. They stress preventative care--if the moths have arrived, it's too late. They cover mildew, stain removal, bleaching, carpet pile, wicker, leather, and bubble gum. There are lists of associations, museums, and conservationists to be contacted for more information, as well as a list of products and places to buy them. Much thought and care has gone into this book--respect and concern for special possessions is evident on each page. Handy to have.

Chintz: Indian Textiles for the West by Rosemary Crill
Chintz: Indian Textiles for the West

Product Description
Over the past hundred years, “chintz” has come to mean any floral printed furnishing fabric, usually made of cotton, and often glazed. Its origins as a hand-drawn and dyed fabric from India are often forgotten, but it is with these rare earlier chintzes that this book is concerned. This stunning album explores in detail the background and development of this beautiful technique and looks at the use of chintz in Europe from the early seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, first as bed curtains and wall hangings and later for popular men’s and women’s fashions. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection, published for the first time in glorious color and including close-up details, will interest interior designers, textile students, and those involved in fashion.

Clothing And Textile Collections in the United States: A Csa Guide (Costume Society of... by Sally Queen and Vicki L. Berger
Clothing And Textile Collections in the United States: A Csa Guide (Costume Society of...

From Booklist
Authors Queen and Berger have produced a field guide to U.S. textile and clothing collections open to the public, with the goal of identifying and promoting such collections. The guide was developed with the assistance of members of the Costume Society of America, who agreed to collect data from their regions. Although some of these collections also appear in the annual Official Museum Directory, this guide is more extensive and includes collections from very small--"1 mannequin dressed in cowboy ensemble" at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Oklahoma--to the more than 80,000 items at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. Each of the 2,604 listings includes at least contact information, and more than 800 entries also include details about the range and focus of the collection as well as access information. The additional data were obtained from the results of a survey sent to each of the sites identified by the members.

The guide is arranged alphabetically by state and then by city or town. At the beginning of each state chapter is a map that shows where the collections are located. Detailed information includes hours, days open, contact person, and collection type as well as a brief description. Collection types are broadly categorized in six groups: clothing, accessories, costumes, uniforms, general textiles, and quilts and flags. The index is an alphabetical list of the museums and collections; however, there is no index to specific types of items or garments, such as wedding dresses or uniforms. In addition, the volume is laced with photos submitted by the various museums and collections, but none of the photos are indexed.

Overall, this is a valuable resource, recommended for all libraries with related specializations or where patrons may have an interest in the topic. The flaws seem minor compared to the fact that the volume costs less than $40. Diana Shonrock

Countless treasures exist in clothing and textile collections across the U.S., but until now no comprehensive directory to the collections was available. Clothing and Textile Collections in the United States is the first guide to list information on more than 2,600 American collections. Included in each listing are location and contact information, and many listings also offer a brief description of the collection. This guide is essential for museum directors, costume studies professionals, and librarians, as well as anyone interested in clothing and textile history.
