Since I lost my copy of Wiener Bronzen in a house fire in 2003, I have been searching for that book (an affordable copy!)and other material on Vienna Bronzes, so I was really excited to see this book, and I was not disappointed. Here are the beautiful Vienna bronzes, which are marvelously detailed small sculptures. That being said, here are my quibbles. I considered giving 4 stars for the quibbles, but I know as an author, some things you just can't control, so I went with 5 stars. (1) There is no index. An index is not necessary but it is helpful. (2) More historical information might be nice. (3) The caption on p. 142 does not fit the image. (4) The dog on p. 101 is not a Great Dane. (5) Captions on the felines would be helpful. I think I see Tom Kitten (?) on p. 48 but can't figure out the cat in front of him. (6) Picture quality can vary widely. For instance, p. 184: the elephant is great, but the oasis is out of focus and the tone is redder than the elephant picture. Many pictures need front/fill lighting and depth of field adjustment. (7) I'd like to see ch. 4 broken into two chapters, and make the cat chapter shorter -- and maybe listing all known activities the cats engage in. So the quibbles can be addressed in the 2nd edition. I think Joseph Zobel has a beautiful book here, showing a broad overview of wiener bronzen, from the comical to the racy, and anyone interested in these pieces would find this a valuable resource.
