Reader Reviews
With an extensive background in freelance writing, conducting screen writing workshops, and performing research for Turner Broadcasting, ABC affiliates, PBS affiliates, government, universities, and municipalities, Toni Lee brings an impressive array of experience to her first adventure novel. Powerhouse Press, her publisher, is an Internet based company which produces not only paper novels, but electronic, audio, and visual formats. Duplicity is a modern day adventure set in Washington DC, Kenya, and Morocco. Clinton Creech is a former FBI agent who quit the organization and lost his wife and son in a mindless car accident on the same day. Overcome with grief, he escapes to Kenya, where the reality of staying alive among hostile animals is a welcome relief to his emotional turmoil. When his brother Will misses his mother's birthday, the entire family knows something is amiss. Will and Clinton's mamma dreams only of Will in a foggy swamp, and her efforts to reach him are to no avail. Clinton agrees to search for Will in Morocco, where the FBI believes a gorgeous psychopath named Saa'iqa Mastoora is implicated in Will's murder: "There was something about her that reminded him of Grace. No other woman he had ever met other than her blood relative Justine, had ever really reminded him of Grace. He could not put his finger on the root of the familiarity. Something in her mannerisms that he was able to catch only in glimpses, that sent him to a place in his heart that felt like home." Duplicity is an adventure thriller with grit and soul. Toni Lee imbues her characters with a spiritual resonance. Saa'iqa and Clinton are totally mesmerizing within their spheres, and Lee teases the reader with what their relationship could become, while simultaneously shocking us with the total depravity of their pain. Clinton and his twin sister share a psychic connection that adds to the spiritual timbre of the story. Duplicity is not simply another adventure thriller; it is a journey into the Afro-American psyche. The plot line is one of international intrigue...it is the underlying elements that Toni Lee brings to Duplicity which makes it compelling. Shelley Glodowski, Reviewer
