From Library Journal
One problem with the great American hobby of baseball card collecting is that there are so many companies, and so many cards (Topps issues 792 each year, plus a 132-card update set) that collectors are often unable to find those depicting favorite players. Remark and Bisk have remedied that with their checklists. Players and other persons (including umpires, managers, and the San Diego Chicken) are listed alphabetically; card numbers are then given, by abbreviations for the major publishers, for the cards issued each year. Both volumes follow this format. The 1948-1989/90 book also has rookie listings, giving the first cards issued for each player (these are often the most highly prized cards), and a yearly listing of rookies; the 1989-1990 book also contains alphabetical listings by teams, and numerical listings of cards by publisher. These books will be appreciated by all baseball enthusiasts. There are other such lists, e.g., Sport Americana Alphabetical Baseball Card Checklist (Edgewater, 1987). However, this is a wonderfully comprehensive and easy-to-use system (partially due to restricting the cards to those published since 1948 in major sets--the cards most often collected), and annual publication will help keep collectors informed. Both volumes are recommended for larger reference, hobby, and sports collections. - Sally G. Waters, Stetson Law Lib., St. Petersburg, Fla. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
